The WNBA suspended Toronto Tempo head coach Sandy Brondello for one game after she was heard calling Atlanta Dream star Angel Reese a “protected species” during a game on July 17. Brondello made the comment to referees in frustration after her player, Nyara Sabally, suffered an injury during a play with Reese. The phrase "protected species" is apparently common Australian sports expression implying a player receives favorable treatment from officials, but it sparked major backlash. Reese initially called out the remarks on social media. Brondello issued a public apology, explaining she was purely frustrated with officiating and acknowledging that the phrase carried unintended hurtful impacts, particularly for Black women. Reese later publicly stated she appreciated the apology and was grateful the league took disciplinary action.
