UNC is currently facing a lawsuit alleging that the university violated North Carolina’s open meetings laws during the hiring of Bill Belichick. The suit was filed by Chris Clemens, a former UNC provost, who claims that the UNC Board of Trustees held an “emergency meeting” behind closed doors on December 12, 2024, to discuss and approve Belichick’s hiring without proper public transparency. The lawsuit also alleges that the board held other closed sessions related to conference realignment, athletics finances, and policy debates that should have been conducted publicly. Clemens further accuses the board of retaliating against him by asking for his resignation after he leaked information about these closed meetings to the faculty. What really happened?
